THE HEART OF THE RIFLE: MUSTANG DPT COLD HAMMER FORGED BARREL
At the heart of the Honest Outlaw Edition is Mustang Armament’s proprietary 12.5″ Duty Precision Taper Cold Hammer Forged barrel.
We begin with 41V50 Chrome Moly Vanadium steel, selected for its combination of strength, toughness, wear resistance, and ability to withstand the thermal and mechanical demands associated with hard-use firearms.
During Cold Hammer Forging, the barrel blank is mechanically forged around a precision carbide mandrel. The forging process forms the bore and rifling geometry while plastically working and work-hardening the steel, creating a dense and durable barrel structure designed for demanding use.
For Mustang, however, the Cold Hammer Forged blank is only the beginning.
THE MUSTANG 7-STEP BARREL PROCESS
BORE-REFERENCED SKIMMING & CONCENTRICITY
The CHF blank is skimmed to establish the exterior diameter in relation to the actual bore centerline.
Rather than assuming the exterior of the raw forging is perfectly concentric to the bore, this operation establishes a more precise reference for the machining processes that follow. The barrel is then cut to final length.
DUTY PRECISION TAPER PROFILING
The barrel is machined to Mustang’s proprietary Duty Precision Taper profile.
The DPT profile is designed to balance:
- Rigidity
- Durability
- Heat management
- Weight
- Practical handling characteristics
The muzzle is then precision threaded 1/2×28 for compatibility with standard .223/5.56 muzzle devices and suppressor mounting systems.
PRECISION CHAMBERING
The chamber is cut using floating tooling designed to follow the existing bore axis, helping maintain chamber-to-bore concentricity.
Maintaining this relationship supports consistent cartridge alignment and overall barrel quality.
.223 WYLDE CHAMBER / 1:7 RIFLING
The Honest Outlaw barrel combines a .223 Wylde chamber with 1:7 twist rifling.
The .223 Wylde chamber provides compatibility with both .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO ammunition while utilizing tighter chamber geometry than a traditional 5.56 NATO chamber.
The 1:7 twist provides broad projectile stabilization across commonly used training, defensive, duty, and heavier match ammunition.
NITRIDE TREATMENT
Following machining, the barrel receives a nitride treatment to improve surface hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance while maintaining the underlying barrel geometry.
NiB BARREL EXTENSION, TORQUE & INDIVIDUAL HEADSPACE
Each barrel receives a Nickel Boron-coated barrel extension.
The NiB coating provides a hard, low-friction and corrosion-resistant surface at one of the rifle’s most heavily loaded mechanical interfaces. It also provides additional protection at the feed ramps and locking-lug interface while contributing to easier cleaning and long-term serviceability.
The barrel extension is torqued to specification.
Each barrel is then individually headspaced rather than relying solely upon nominal component dimensions, providing an additional quality-control step at one of the most critical dimensional relationships in the completed firearm.
FINAL SMALL-BATCH OPERATIONS
Final operations are performed in controlled small batches and include:
- Gas-port machining
- Gas-block dimpling
- Barrel engraving
- Final dimensional operations
- Final inspection
The completed barrel is paired with a triple-screw skeletonized gas block and midlength gas system.
MACHINED DIFFERENT: MUSTANG BILLET RECEIVER SYSTEM
The foundation of the Honest Outlaw Edition is Mustang Armament’s proprietary 7075-T6 billet receiver system and 11.5″ billet handguard.
Critical receiver geometry is machined using a 5-axis process designed to complete as much of the receiver as possible in a single setup.
Minimizing unnecessary repositioning and re-fixturing reduces opportunities for tolerance stack-up and helps preserve the dimensional relationship between critical receiver features.
The result is the exceptionally tight and repeatable upper-to-lower fit Mustang billet rifles are known for, achieved through precision machining rather than receiver tensioning screws or aftermarket tensioning devices.

Rather than relying on a conventional carbine buffer and spring assembly, the Honest Outlaw Edition uses a JP Enterprises Silent Captured Spring system tuned around the 12.5″ midlength operating system.
The recoil system is paired with:

- SBA6 brace
- PWS enhanced ratcheting castle nut
- Mustang-spec recoil configuration
The objective is a smooth, controlled operating cycle rather than simply assembling the rifle around a generic recoil system.
SUPPRESSOR READY
The Honest Outlaw Edition comes equipped with a Rearden R2S muzzle device.
The R2S provides a compact Plan B-compatible suppressor mounting interface while maintaining a practical muzzle-device profile when the rifle is fired unsuppressed.
Its Plan B-compatible architecture gives the owner access to a broad ecosystem of compatible suppressor mounting solutions without locking the rifle into a single proprietary suppressor system.
For shooters who intend to suppress the rifle, the R2S provides a versatile foundation from the moment the rifle leaves Mustang.
SIGHTS
Every Honest Outlaw Edition includes:
